From Blade Runner, The Terminator, to The Matrix, and to Avatar, some of the biggest and most impactful movies in history have been sci-fi films. When a sci-fi film succeeds and gets things right, it can make an unforgettable impact on audiences, the genre, and cinema itself. And even more so, if said film has a built-in fan base that is hyped for the release and spent a lot of imagination picturing the fascinating world/worlds, creatures, technology, and how it would all look come to life. There's more risk attached to Sci-Fi because of how expensive it can get and all the extra aspects that have to be done, such as VFX work, etc. This makes it all the more heartbreaking when a sci-fi film, especially an expensive one, flops at the box office.
